Overview

Crystagen is a thymic-derived peptide bioregulator that modulates immune function, supports thymic repair, and enhances lymphocyte output. It is administered orally and has been shown in Eastern European research to improve immune performance in aging and immunosuppressed individuals.

Scientific findings

Using an organotypic tissue-culture model of spleen from young and old animals, the authors compared the immunotropic activity of the short peptides Vilon, Thymogen, Crystagen, and R-1, assessing effects on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation of immune-cell subpopulations. Crystagen was found to activate B-lymphocytes of the immune system, but, in contrast to peptides such as Vilon and R-1 (which stimulate T-helpers and cell renewal), Crystagen did not induce cellular renewal/proliferation in the aging spleen. The work frames distinct, peptide-specific mechanisms of immunoprotection during splenic ageing.

Plain English

Researchers grew spleen tissue from young and old animals and tested several short peptides, including Crystagen, to see how each supports the aging immune system. Crystagen appeared to switch on B-cells (the antibody-producing immune cells) but, unlike some of the other peptides tested, did not help the old spleen generate new cells. This is early-stage laboratory (tissue-culture) research from the Khavinson group, not a human clinical trial. It is the only dedicated Crystagen study indexed on PubMed.
