Overview

Nephroprotective Effect of EDL Peptide at Acute Injury of Kidneys of Different Genesis

In rat models of gentamicin-induced nephropathy and ischemia/reperfusion injury, the tripeptide EDL (Glu-Asp-Leu, the molecule marketed as Ovagen) produced a nephroprotective effect, preventing oliguria, azotemia, and proteinuria, reducing sodium excretion, and preserving renal antioxidant enzyme activity and cellular energy metabolism. Protection occurred across two mechanistically distinct injury models, suggesting a general cytoprotective action on renal tissue. Notably, the verified peer-reviewed evidence for this peptide concerns the kidney rather than the liver/intestine indication used in commercial marketing.
In rats with two different kinds of kidney damage, the peptide EDL (Glu-Asp-Leu, the same molecule sold as Ovagen) helped protect the kidneys, keeping urine output, waste clearance, and urine protein closer to normal while preserving the kidneys' antioxidant defenses. Because it worked against both injury types, the effect looks broadly protective. Despite marketing that frames Ovagen as a liver/gut peptide, this actual published research is about the kidney.
Peptides Restore Functional State of the Kidneys During Cisplatin-Induced Acute Renal Failure

In rats with cisplatin-induced acute renal failure, a kidney polypeptide complex together with the tripeptides EDL (explicitly given as Glu-Asp-Leu) and AEDG normalized diuresis, urinary creatinine concentration and excretion, and glomerular filtration rate, while AED reduced protein and electrolyte excretion. EDL was among the peptides producing the strongest restoration of functional renal markers. This is a comparative peptide study in which EDL/Ovagen is one of several active agents, and the endpoint is renal function.
In rats whose kidneys were damaged by the chemotherapy drug cisplatin, several peptides, including EDL (the Ovagen molecule), helped restore normal kidney function such as urine production and filtration rate. EDL was among the most effective of the peptides tested. Once again, the real evidence for this molecule is about protecting kidneys, not the liver or gut.
Short Peptides Regulate Gene Expression

This molecular-modeling review constructed spatial DNA-peptide docking models for 19 short peptides and proposed that they regulate transcription by binding specific promoter sequences; EDL (Glu-Asp-Leu, Ovagen) and AEDL were modeled to bind the 'CTCC' DNA site. It offers the theoretical epigenetic mechanism by which such peptides could modulate gene expression and downstream protein synthesis. It is a broad in silico review covering many bioregulators rather than a dedicated experimental study of Ovagen alone.
This review used computer modeling to predict how very short peptides might attach to specific spots on DNA to turn genes on or off, with EDL (Ovagen) predicted to bind one particular DNA sequence. It provides a proposed explanation for how these peptides could influence which proteins a cell makes. It is a computational overview of many peptides, not a hands-on experiment focused only on Ovagen.
